IIT Rajasthan to run from Jodhpur Engineering (MBM) college

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajasthan, which is scheduled to begin its academic session next year in 2010, will temporarily operate from the MBM (Mugniram Bangur Memorial) Engineering College in Jodhpur until the construction of a new building for IIT-R.

"A letter for acquisition of land for the IIT has been sent to the District Collector. Four hundred twenty one acres land out of the marked land is under private ownership, thus their acquisition process will start soon", the institute's Chief Administrative Officer Vipin Chandra Sharma said.

He also informed that the IIT will run at the MBM Engineering College till the construction of the new building is complete.

The laboratories of the college will be constructed at par with the IIT. Students opting for hostel facility at the IIT, would, for the time being, be accommodated in the hostel constructed for AIMS.

The three-member group from IIT Rajasthan has also demanded 100 acres more land near the marked one so that research project for the IIT could be established there.

A decision on the extra land requirement will be taken only once the three-member group from IIT Rajasthan submits its report seeking more land for the IIT.

IIT Rajasthan gradually shifting towards Jodhpur

IIT RajasthanIIT Rajasthan: In what can be referred to as one step further towards shifting the IIT Rajasthan from Kanpur to Jodhpur, a team comprising administrative in-charge of IIT Rajasthan (Kanpur) Niraj Gupta and two others, visited the MBM Engineering College here on Friday.

Sources said they discussed the make-shift requirements and took stock of the facilities available in the college. The team will submit the report to the Director (IIT Rajasthan), who is scheduled to visit the city in the first week of December to consolidate the ground for shifting.

MBM dean Arvind Roy said that the team was here to oversee the proposed shifting early next year. The team had a thorough visit of the entire college campus buildings, classrooms, laboratories and other rooms housing different departments and collected a map of the college.

Roy added that their main focus, however, was on the hostel facilities, for which they also visited the AIIMS site, where the students are initially proposed to be shifted, in case the building of the IIT Rajasthan is not ready by then.

It is evident that there has been an understanding in-principle that IIT Rajasthan will be shifted to the said college here from next year. A Central team, headed by Union additional secretary (HRD) Ashok Thakur, recently visited the college and the hostels which are complete and said to have expressed satisfaction with the arrangements there.

The visit of this team of these sites again has further strengthened that fact that the plans of shifting are gradually taking shape. The team will explore and identify the necessary additions and alterations that will have to be made into the existing structure of the college to accommodate IIT Rajasthan and prepare a report to be submitted to the director.
